Tips on How to Deal With Asbestos Cautiously

Environmental Blog

Although the use of building materials containing asbestos is currently banned, there is a probability of coming across it if you are occupying a building that was constructed before the start of the 21st century. Asbestos may be found in residential and commercial buildings, and it is essential to handle the asbestos disposal correctly to prevent potential harm. Luckily, with the right safety tips, asbestos can be dealt with effectively and safely. So, whether you are in the construction industry or have asbestos in your attic, here is how you can dispose of asbestos.

Get a survey

Before asbestos removal is done or any construction work, be sure to get an asbestos survey. This informs you of the asbestos location, type and amount. The surveyors usually test and examine various materials to confirm the presence or absence of asbestos in the building. There are two forms of surveys: a management survey that's done regularly to ensure the building occupants aren't harmed by the presence of asbestos, and a demolition survey conducted before a building is demolished.

Put on appropriate equipment

Safety clothing is essential when you are working with asbestos; it will offer much-needed protection. Disposable overalls are more suitable, and it's advisable to choose a size up to ensure it doesn't get ripped off at the seams. A fitting mask is required as it will provide protection against inhaling asbestos dust. Remember that the masks are disposable and cannot be used twice. This way, you'll avoid contamination, including the risk of asbestos dust fibre transfer. Finally, gloves are also needed and should be used once and disposed of just like the overalls and masks.

Dispose of the asbestos waste correctly

After asbestos removal (never use power tools for removal or sweep the fibres), the debris collected using the vacuum cleaner and protective equipment must be disposed of properly each day to prevent contamination. The asbestos waste needs to be double bagged in appropriate heavy-duty asbestos bags and sealed. The waste shouldn't be handled if you aren't wearing the safety equipment and gloves, and these can only be removed and placed in the bags once the asbestos waste has been dealt with appropriately.

The asbestos waste must be labelled clearly and then transported to an approved landfill site, which is equipped to deal with such waste. The waste is transferred in a sealed skip or an easily cleanable vehicle that has lockable segregated compartments.

Remember, it's always better to hire experts to handle asbestos removal and disposal to protect your loved ones and ensure the task is done professionally.

Erin's Green Environmental Blog

My name is Erin and over the past couple of years, I have become increasingly interested in environmentalism and the impact that humankind is having on the planet. My interest started when I saw an interesting documentary on the TV which outlined the implications of climate change. I decided there and then that I was going to educate myself. I have been taking steps to reduce my impact on the environment. My most recent step was to install solar panels onto the roof of my property. I am really pleased with this decision so I decided I would write about it here.
